Cameroon

The Republic of Cameroon is a country in West and Central Africa that overlooks the Gulf of Guinea in the Atlantic Ocean. The nickname “Little Africa” depicts the richness and diversity of the landscape very well. Independent nation since 1960, in the past it was home to a Bantu empire, a German colony, a British and Anglo-French colony, and it has a population that exceeds 28 million inhabitants, composed of a large variety of ethnic groups.

In Cameroon, the sociopolitical context, characterized by high poverty rates, is very unstable, in the South-West, North-West, and the West confining regions, in particular.

The English-speaking community that resides in the ancient regions under British protection, and represents about 20% of the population, accuses the Francophone central government of marginalizing the minority, economically and politically.

Since the 2016-2017 protests, the situation has degenerated to widespread armed violence, which has caused internal migrations and to neighbouring Nigeria. The current state is one of extreme pain and loss of human lives, which requires long-lasting solutions for the most vulnerable population groups.

EducAid has been operating in Cameroon since 2022 through interventions in the education field for the promotion of rights of persons with disabilities, in collaboration with the Department of Education Studies “Giovanni Maria Bertin” of the University of Bologna and the local partner ANOPHAC – Alliance Nationale des Organisations de Promotion des Personnes Handicapées au Cameroun.
